Spearfish drivers will see the biggest change this week: starting Monday, left turns are banned from Old Highway 14 and from northbound North Avenue onto Old Highway 14 at Interstate 90 Exit 10. In Rapid City, Viking Drive is now closed at Haines Avenue, and U.S. Highway 16A remains closed in Keystone.

Interstate 90

I-90 between Exit 17 (U.S. 85 south) and Whitewood, Exit 23, remains one lane with a 65 mph limit and a 16-foot width limit until further notice for ditch grading, shoulder repair and a culvert extension, per SD 511.

I-90 from 1 mile west of Piedmont, Exit 44, to just west of Summerset, Exit 48, remains one lane in each direction until further notice for the Exit 46 reconstruction, with a 65 mph limit that may drop to 45 mph when workers are present and a 16-foot width limit, per SD 511. The overnight eastbound closures there were scheduled to end Thursday, according to the South Dakota Department of Transportation.

Rapid City and Pennington County

U.S. Highway 16A in Keystone remains closed at the S.D. Highway 40 intersection for a bridge replacement, with a 12-foot width limit and a 50-foot length limit until further notice. A detour is provided, according to SDDOT's project page.

Spearfish, Deadwood, Lead and Lawrence County

North Avenue in Spearfish, at I-90 Exit 10, enters its final phase Monday, Nov. 9, SDDOT said. The new loon turnaround opens, and while crews build the northern median, left turns from Old Highway 14 and northbound left turns from North Avenue onto Old Highway 14 are prohibited. SDDOT suggests Exit 8 to reach Old Highway 14; all I-90 ramps stay open. North Avenue remains one lane each way with a 35 mph limit, no passing and a 16-foot width limit until further notice, per SD 511. Completion is set for Friday, Nov. 20; project engineer Zach Kuhn, 605-892-2872.

U.S. Highway 14A at Cheyenne Crossing, from the U.S. 85 junction to a half mile east, is still one lane under temporary signals for a culvert replacement on Ice Box Creek, with delays of about 10 minutes and a 12-foot width limit until further notice, per SD 511.

Custer, Hill City and Custer County

U.S. Highway 16A and S.D. Highway 87 in Custer State Park have curve-straightening work that began Tuesday, Nov. 3, SDDOT said: U.S. 16A from mile marker 45.6 to 45.9, about a half mile south of S. Playhouse Road, and S.D. 87 from mile marker 57.2 to 57.5, about a half mile south of U.S. 16A. Expect flaggers, a pilot car and delays up to 10 minutes during working hours. Completion is set for Friday, July 2, 2027; project engineer Montana Rivard, 605-981-5089.

Hot Springs and Fall River County

U.S. Highway 385 in Hot Springs, 1 to 1.5 miles north of the U.S. 18 West junction, has a lane shift for a city bridge project and no vehicles wider than 12 feet until further notice, per SD 511.

S.D. Highway 79 north of Hot Springs, from the U.S. 18 and U.S. 385 junction east of town to 7.25 miles north, has northbound pavement repair with one lane, no passing and a 16-foot width limit Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. until further notice, per SD 511.

Later: SDDOT holds an open house Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 5:30 p.m. at the New Underwood Community Center on proposed I-90 reconstruction between New Underwood and Wasta; comments are due Tuesday, Dec. 8. New signals at Spearfish Exit 10 are expected in January 2027. U.S. 16A in Keystone is scheduled to reopen by April 23, 2027, and the Exit 46 work at Piedmont runs through December 2028.
