Drivers should allow extra time on US 12 in the Forsyth area, where MDT says to expect flaggers and single-lane traffic in active work areas as crews finish the season on its timber bridges project. Interstate 94 near Terry has fencing crews and equipment along the shoulders, and shoulder work continues farther east.
Interstate 94
I-94 from milepost 169.8 to 186.8, in the Terry area, has fencing work along both the eastbound and westbound lanes. Watch for vehicles and equipment on or near the shoulders, and for work vehicles entering and leaving the interstate from the shoulder. Montana 511 lists the work from Oct. 15 with an end date of Jan. 1, 2027. Ongoing.
I-94 from milepost 187.1 to 192.6, east of Terry, has shoulder work and construction signs. Montana 511 lists it from April 13 with an end date of Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. and says to watch for shoulder roadwork until winter. No lane closure is posted. Ongoing, with the listing set to end Nov. 15.
Rosebud County
US 12 from milepost 228 to 260, the Forsyth-area timber bridges project, has flaggers, lane closures, a 25 mph speed limit and a 14-foot width limit, with delays of about 10 minutes, according to Montana 511. That listing, last updated July 30, also warns of loose gravel and asks motorcyclists to consider another route, and it flags a detour but does not describe its alignment. It carries an end date of Dec. 11 at 5 p.m. In its Oct. 19 project update, MDT said crews were turning to slope work, seeding and reclamation ahead of the winter shutdown, and that drivers should still expect reduced speeds, single-lane traffic and flaggers in active work areas. A shutdown date is not posted. Ongoing.
Wibaux County
Highway S-261 north of Wibaux, from milepost 13.61 to 27, has a long-term weight limit on the county-maintained portion of the road: 8 tons per single axle, 16 tons per tandem axle and 400 pounds per inch of tire width. Montana 511 lists it as in place since 2021 until further notice. Ongoing.
Done: Paving on the US 12 timber bridges corridor near Forsyth is finished, MDT reported Oct. 19. Other work on the project continues.
Later: The current 511 listings carry end dates of Nov. 15 for the I-94 shoulder work east of Terry, Dec. 11 for US 12 near Forsyth and Jan. 1 for the Terry-area fencing on I-94. Looking further out, MDT is taking comments on a plan to replace three bridges on about 3 miles of Old Highway 10 between Terry and Miles City, from northeast of the Diamond Ring Road intersection to the Prairie County line. Construction is tentatively planned for 2027, with traffic disruptions expected in 2027 and 2028, and MDT is asking for feedback on using route closures and on reducing the width between the bridge guardrails from 30 feet to 28 feet. Identify comments as Terry-Miles City Bridges, UPN 10663000. Comments go through the MDT comment form or by mail to the MDT Glendive office, PO Box 890, Glendive, MT 59330.
